BANGKIT/ARISE Yogya Departure – San Francisco Arrival/Introduction

Bangkit/Arise is an international arts exchange and residency between artists from the San Francisco/Bay Area, USA and Yogyakarta Indonesia. The lead sponsoring organization for Bangkit/Arise is Clarion Alley Mural Project, based in San Francisco in collaboration with the Asian Art Museum Chong Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture. The projects partners in Yogyakarta Indonesia are Desa Panggungharjo and the Institut Seni Indonesia, Yogyakarta.

In July/August 2018 five of the artists from the SF/Bay Area – Kelly Ording, Jet Martinez, Jose Guerra, Christopher Statton and Megan Wilson arrived in Yogyakarta to spend 5 – 7 weeks as part of the residency exchange.

Unfortunately because of greater geopolitical circumstances, two of the Bay Area artists – Shaghayegh Cyrous and Keyvan Shovir were unable travel and to be a part of the first phase of the exchange; however, they are still very much a part of the exchange and will be traveling to Yogyakarta as soon as it is possible.

As part of Bangkit/Arise in Yogyakarta we accomplished the following:

  • We met with the Mayor of the Panggungharjo district of Yogyakarta to learn about the priorities of the community and how it’s governed;
  • We met with the dean and department head of fine art at ISI, the Institute of Art Indonesia;
  • We Created 12 murals;
  • We supported and worked with Diff Com – the differently-abled and friends community of Kampung Dolanan to create a mural and present Wayang Polah, a performance in the outdoor community center;
  • We collaborated with the band Not Biru to help support their first CD release -Not Biru is an acoustic folk band formed by members of Diff Com. The release was in conjunction with Wayang Polah as a fundraiser for those on Lombok affected by the earthquake in early August;
  • We lead a workshop on social/political public messaging at the ISI campus; and
  • We participated in cultural outings together every week.

SAN FRANCISCO ARRIVAL! WELCOME!

On September 3rd six of the Yogyakarta artists – Nano Warsono, Bambang Toko, Ucup, Wedhar Riyadi, Vina Puspita and Harind Ndarvati arrived in San Francisco to spend 8 weeks in the Bay Area getting to work with our communities here.

Sadly, one of the Indonesian artists – Codit – was unable to be a part of the current residency in San Francisco due to greater geopolitics; however, he too is still part of the exchange and will travel to San Francisco when possible.

INTRODUCTION TO OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS IN SAN FRANCISCO

In San Francisco, like the work with Yogyakarta Bangkit/Arise is focused on community building and addressing issues that are currently critical to our communities. The project is focused on the Civic Center Commons (Tenderloin/Mid-Market/SoMa) and Mission District neighborhoods. Community organizations that Bangkit/Arise San Francisco is partnering with include: AROC (Arab Resource Organizing Center), SOMCAN (South of Market Community Action Network), Coalition On Homelessness, and the Poster Syndicate.

Specific Issues we are addressing include: support for Palestine, the role of the community commons, support for organizations serving folks experiencing poverty and homelessness, immigration, and public space.

ASIAN ART MUSEUM & VILLAGE ARTIST CORNER

Outside Asian Art Museum with Deborah Clearwaters, Director of Education and Public Programs

The Asian Art Museum’s Village Artist Corner (VAC) features rotating murals and monthly programs at the dragon sculpture on the corner of Fulton and Larkin Streets adjacent to the Asian Art Museum. The program was developed as part of Groundplay, a City collaboration co-led by the Mayor’s Office of Civic Innovation, San Francisco Planning, and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Bangkit/Arise will be creating a mural installation and public programming in the VAC. Our first introduction was to visit the space and discuss possibilities.

The current exhibition at the VAC is by Cece Carpio. Cece Carpio’s painted portraits of women from the Tenderloin neighborhood reveal the powerful presence of those who are often invisible in our society.
